WAYNE AND BETTY
History of the Volleyball Superbowl
In 1971, Wayne and Betty participated in two nudist volleyball leagues in the East and Midwest. They had the idea to join the two leagues at the end of the season, invite other teams, and sponsor a huge tournament. Wayne asked White Thorn officials if they would be willing to host the tournament as a neutral club. Superbowl #1 was held the last weekend in August, 1971, on two dirt courts. The tournament grew and soon it was decided that it would be held on the weekend after Labor Day. It is now the largest tournament of its kind, with many participants returning year after year for the best fun bargain of the summer.
In 2003, responding to the many participants that arrive early in the week or even arrive the weekend prior, “Early-Bird” tournaments were added on Wednesday and Thursday with evening entertainment options during the week. With the availability of our deep white sand courts, the games go on rain or shine, as happened in 2007 when the AA and A Sunday playoffs utilized them. Continuing to address the “early birds”, in 2011 the club began a 10 day/9 night promotional offering using the “Volleyball Nakation” motif.
